Risks of Blood Tests

Despite the safety of blood collection (phlebotomy), there are potential risks:

* Bleeding and bruising: Avoidable by applying firm pressure after needle removal.
* Pain: Usually mild and temporary.
* Infection: Uncommon.

Additional Precautions:

* Inform healthcare professionals if your arm is swollen or at risk of edema.
* Report any dizziness during the procedure.

Types of Blood Tests:

* Complete blood count (CBC): Evaluates red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and hemoglobin.
* Basic metabolic panel: Measures glucose, calcium, sodium, potassium, chloride, creatinine, and BUN to assess organ function.
* Coagulation factors: Protein and chemical levels involved in blood clotting.
* Autoimmune and immune-system tests: Detect antibodies or markers related to autoimmune disorders.

Preparation:

* Fasting may be required for up to 12 hours before certain tests.
* Discuss medication instructions with your healthcare provider if you take multiple medications.
